Question:

A lot of people were affected by the terrorist attack of 9/11 including the family members of the victims. How were the lives of those immediate family members, the children specifically, affected?

What I already know:

The events of 9/11 took a toll on most Americans. The emotional response to the attacks was huge as a country and as a people. However, the people closest to the victims had to have been effected the most. I know that spouses and children were directly effected, I just want to know exactly what kinds of effects and emotions the direct family members are faced with, even now.

Sources:

I'll look at books, diaries of the children, interviews with them and drawings they may have done after the incident.

Outline:

I. Intro-

I'll introduce the topic and the question. How were children of the 9/11 victims affected by the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center? I'll give a re-cap of the events of that day before presenting the question.

II. Historical Context-

I'll give the information that we know and the statistics. The attacks were on September 11, 2001, over 2,700 people died in New York as a result of the attacks, about 3,000 children under the age of 18 lost a parent in the attacks and the average number of the children was 9, and that 108 children were born in the months after their fathers died. We also know that the events were traumatizing and and left a huge impact on those who were affected.

III. Direct Response -

The children had multiple feelings at the time of the attacks and in the years after. They also had a variety of coping mechanisms. The children talk about their process of evolving as people. The children express themselves through different mechanisms such as speaking, writing and drawing.

IV. Corroboration-

Similarities: The children all had some sort of way with overcoming and accepting the tragedy.

Differences: The differences were how each child overcame it.

Conclusions: What can be drawn is that the attacks of 9/11 impacted the children on a much more personal level than it did the nation as a whole.

More primary sources may answer the question more fully. A diary of a child who's parent(s) died would also be beneficial.

First Draft

The first draft was mainly just the introduction and the first source. I didn't feel like I had all of my other sources together enough to start writing them.

Final Draft

Working on the final draft was definitely a continuous work in progress for me. I left the paper and came back multiple times. Once I felt I had a good collection of sources and an outline that made sense I started putting things together. Since the majority of my sources were interviews, I had a lot of quotes to use. Once I started with the "meat" part I really rolled right through it.
